Set against the backdrop of post-Burhan Wani encounters in Kashmir, “Kahwa ” intricately weaves the story of Surkhab, a dedicated CRPF officer, and Shaukhat, a humble tea seller. Initially wary of each other’s presence amidst prevailing tensions, a simple gesture of sharing a cup of Kahwa breaks the ice between them. Amidst curfews and unrest, their unlikely friendship blossoms as they share their dreams and fears.

However, their bond faces a severe test when an unforeseen event rocks their neighborhood, challenging their newfound connection. Surkhab and Shaukhat are forced to confront their beliefs and loyalties, grappling with the complexities of their intertwined lives amidst the volatile atmosphere of Kashmir.

ABOUT THE POST BURHAN WANI PERIOD

Militant leader Burhan Wani’s death in a gun battle with government forces in Indian-administered Kashmir had sparked days of deadly violence in 2016. Burhan Wani’s funeral was attended by thousands of people, and despite restrictions, the funeral venue was so crowded there was no space to conduct funeral prayers. Wani, 22, is largely credited with reviving and legitimising the image of militancy in Muslim-majority Indian-administered Kashmir.After the news of his death spread, violent protests erupted in some areas of Kashmir Valley. Separatist leaders called for shutdown in Kashmir which was repeatedly extended before being called off in February 2017. Police stations and security forces were attacked by mobs. Stone pelting was reported from many parts in Kashmir. Curfew was imposed in all districts of Kashmir on 15 July. Many civilians and army forces lost their lives in this unrest.

My vision for “Kahwa” was to create a narrative that transcends the political and cultural divides, showcasing the profound human connections that can arise even in the most turbulent times. Set in the volatile backdrop of the post-Burhan Wani encounter in Kashmir, this film talks about the lives of two seemingly disparate individuals—a CRPF officer and a local tea seller—whose friendship blooms against the odds.

I wanted to capture the essence of Kashmir, not just as a land of conflict but as a place where everyday moments of empathy and understanding can lead to transformative relationships serving as a metaphor for the bridging of divides and the breaking down of barriers.

In making this film, it was crucial for me to portray the characters with authenticity and depth, respecting the complex emotions and experiences of those living in conflict zones. By highlighting their personal stories, dreams, and dilemmas, I aimed to humanize the broader socio-political narrative and offer a nuanced perspective on the impact of unrest on individual lives.

“Kahwa” is not just a story of friendship but a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Through Surkhab and Shaukhat’s journey, I hope to inspire audiences to see beyond stereotypes and recognize the universal values of compassion, acceptance, and empathy. This film is a call for dialogue, understanding, and, ultimately, peace in a world that often seems divided.

Gunjan Utreja, an acclaimed actor who did his Masters in Dramatics from Punjab University and is known for his dynamic performances and as a popular host, is ready to take a giant leap into international cinema. With “Kahwa,” Utreja brings to life the character of Surkhab Singh, an Army officer stationed in Kashmir. His portrayal delves into the complexities of human relationships amidst political turmoil, highlighting his versatility and depth as an actor.

Written and directed by Shubh Mukherjee, “Kahwa” is a testament to emerging talent in Indian cinema. Shubh Mukherjee, a prolific filmmaker and brand ambassador for Sony Cameras in India and a creator for Nanlight India, has also edited, and shot “Kahwa,” talk about a one man army. He aimed to tell this story with a unique storytelling approach that captures the raw and authentic essence of the human spirit. Mukherjee started his career directing a feature film in Bollywood and is now making a comeback into films through this story.
